SMMHC – Lewis and Clark Heritage Days
This weekend the Show Me Morgan Horse Club participats in the Lewis and Clark Heritage Days down on the riverfront in Historic St Charles, MO. This is an annual event that the club has participated in for many years. To my knowledge Morgans weren’t a part of the Lewis and Clark expeditions, but it’s a great event for the club since we actually get paid to have fun with our Morgans! Plus this is excellent exposure for the breed to the general public.
The weekend starts off with a parade down South Main Street on Saturday morning. At noon we give a 30 minute demonstration where we get to show off our Morgans. Nancy Allen presents information about the history of the breed and announces as the riders demonstrate a trotting race, drill routine (by “company D” for disorganized, haha), basic dressage moves and other tricks. Most years we also give a sidesaddle demonstration (but since the club side-saddle is very old, pre civil war, it’s starting to fall apart) and a log pull.
After the demonstration we allow the crowd to come up for a meet, greet, and treat time (we are dealing with Morgans after all, it wouldn’t be complete without the treats). Once the crowd disperses we retire to our tent and picket line where we grab some lunch and chat with passers-by who want to say hi to the horses.
The routine repeats on Sunday, except for the parade. As you can see, all participants dress in period appropriate clothing. It can get pretty uncomfortable if the day is very hot!
