OKC Trip Day 1: Mostly Driving

Well, I’m here.  I left my house a little before noon today and pulled in just as the evening sessions were getting started.  Before I just gloss over the trip, though, I’d like to give a tip to anyone who has not driven through the state of Oklahoma before.  If you’re like me, you’re used to driving in the eastern half of the country where the population is more dense, and therefore the opportunities to stop and eat, gas up, pee, whatever, are plentiful.  I’m used to being able to pick and choose which fast food restaurant I’m in the mood for when meal time rolls around and just waiting til I hit an exit that’s got what I’m looking for.  NOT SO in Oklahoma, or at least not the eastern half of I-44.  I might’ve been able to hit something in Tulsa, but construction was a disaster and I didn’t want to get off the highway as messy as it was.  So, I ended up stopping at the only McDonalds between Tulsa and OKC (not kidding) for my dinner.  Next time I will be more prepared!  Fill up my tank and my tummy before hitting that state line.

But, moving on… Like I said, I rolled in right about as the evening session was getting started.  First thing I did was explore the coliseum, boy there’s a lot going on in there.  Vendors abound with art, jewelry, food, tack, show attire, you name it.  My first stop was at the Hospitality Center to pick up a program and figure out where some of my friends are stabled.  I did pop into the stands to watch a few classes and snap a few photos (mostly playing with the settings on my camera), but most of my night was spent walking around in the barns.  It’s massive here, I don’t know if I’ve given myself enough time with just 2 more days to go.

One newsworthy item off the top of my head, if you’re here, Kurt Hufferd is celebrating 20 years with Indian Creek this year (in case you didn’t already know).  Swing by the IC stables in barn 6 and congratulate him!  They’ve put together some great pictures  of his time there… going back all the way to when he actually had hair!

That’s all I got for now.  Most of my thoughts are still pretty scattered… just taking it all in, really.  I’m going to take a look at some of the pics I got tonight.  If there are any good ones I’ll post them over on the Facebook side of things.
