Amateur

Can anyone tell me what the rules are regarding horse ownership and showing amateur classes?  Does the amateur doing the showing have to actually own the horse being shown?

Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge there are no specific regulations in the MOrgan Division regarding owning the horses that an Amatuer might ride. (Arab does have Amatuer Owner to Ride classes). You can ride any horse in Amateur owned by anyone as long as you are not paid to ride the horse or you train any horse that you or a member of your family is paid to train. The USEF Amateur section lays out the full requirements for qualifying as an amateur. I have ridden lots of horses that I didn’t own in Amateur classes and since I didn’t train the horses it was all good. NOW-Amateur Owned Trained and Shown is a different thing and in those classes, you MUST be the Owner, rider, trainer and Exhibitor.

    Hope this helps

What Sue said! Unless the class specifically states Amateur Owned or Amateur Owner, you do NOT have to own the horse. In fact, a fair bit of catch riding is done in the Amateur division.

You also do not have to own your horse in the Classic Pleasure division (which of course is Amateur-only) unless, once again, it states Amateur Owned or Amateur Owner. (At most shows they don’t have this, but I’d imagine at some smaller shows they may have a class that specifically states this – and of course there’s always the Amateur Owned/Trained/Shown classes, too.)
