What’s Up At The 2009 AMHA Convention

The Annual AMHA Convention is being held February 18-21 in Sacramento, CA. Although I will not be able to attend, I decided to take a look at the AMHA website to see what sort of programs are slated for this year’s event. After reading it, I really wished I had the extra cash and time to make the trip out west. There is lots of cool stuff going on.

Two different Barn Tours are being offered to this year’s attendees. Tour 1 will first head to the Woodland Stallion Station where demonstrations and discussions will focus on the Trail, Dressage, and Carriage disciplines. Sharon Spier, DVM will be discussion aspects of equine medicine and will be giving a seminar titled “Olympic Equine Medicine: Experiences as an Emergency Treating Veterinarian at 5 Olympic Games.”

The second stop will be at Dragonfire Farm where the Dragonfire World Champions and World Champion Stallions will be presented. Among other interesting topics, 2008 Eventing Olympic Silver Medallist, Gina Miles will be discussing Morgan Horse participation in Eventing and will be recapping her experiences of her Olympic experience at Beijing.

Tour 2 will begin at Garn Walker Stables. While Melissa Walker will be discussing the importance of first impressions in the show ring, Garn Walker will conduct a Mini-Clinic covering the topics of Starting Young Horses, Bits and Bitting, Neck Reining, and the Mature Show Horse.

After leaving Garn Walker Stables, the tour continues on to Futurity Farm where the afternoon starts with a Stallion Presentation and continues on with presentations and discussions on Equitation, the Master’s Western and Hunt divisions, Breeding and Stallion management and Western Dressage.

The day following the Tours many symposiums and discussions are scheduled which will cover a vast array of topics including such things as starting lesson programs, breeding issues, marketing, web design and equine dentistry.

All in all it looks like the Convention will have something for everybody. I hope that it is a great success and if you attend we would love to hear of your experiences here on AboveLevel.com.
