Equine Affair!!!!!!

What an Affair it is!

I know this is all MORGANS and everything but, please be happy for me just this once! PLEASE!

I just got a call from a friend and they need another rider for the Paso performance and….

I get toooo ride!

And not only any Paso but, a Fino mare.
Fun. Just had to get this out with other horsey people. Sorry I know the drill only Morgans. Just had to share.

Frozen Semen

Hi Guy’s and Gal’s,

Me again! I am looking into breeding my mare this year. I found a stallion I would like to breed to but, he only comes through frozen semen. The lady that owns the stallion told me that while this stallion has had a conception rate of 99% all the time breeding a “virgin” mare using frozen semen may not be the best idea.

Has anyone here had trouble using frozen semen? I would like to be able to “cover my bases” and understand a little better this way of breeding. I personally do not see too much problem as my mare is an absolute “hussie” but, consider wisdom comes from much counsil.

Also, what is the average median price for vet fees when breeding a mare this way? Excluding the stud fee and shipping the semen. Just trying to get the feel of the market area.

Thanks,
Nikki

New Poll – The Economy and Shows

The economic crisis that the US (and the world) is facing has affected everybody in some capacity. Some more than others. I will admit, it has caused me to make some very difficult choices regarding my horses, breeding, and showing.

I am wondering how it is affecting others and how it will affect the numbers of exhibitors and horses this show season. Please vote on the new poll and/or comment on this post to let us know how it is affecting you.

Humor me…

Just wanted to know if anyone here has any experience with Tug Hill Celebrity babies. I have a coming 2 year old by him and (while I know bloodlines aren’t everything) I would like to know what people have thought of his babies so far. I’ve seen lots of produce by Man About Town LPS that I have liked, but not many other direct produce of THC. According to the breeder I got my boy from, his daddy was pretty infertile so his babies are somewhat scarce. Are there any other nice horses by him around that I’ve missed? I wish I could post a picture of him, but apparently I’m a bad owner and don’t have any :(

PS: here’s my boys full pedigree, let me know what you think and be honest… since I’m still “green” to the morgan world I’m always interested in other peoples opinions, and I won’t take too much offense :)

I am learning  so much about the show world of Morgan Horses. I have never shown a Morgan horse in a Morgan Horse Show, but I do show my Morgans. I am Carole Mercer and my Morgans are the Dancing Morgans. I have been sharing my stories of how I live and what I do with my Morgan horses with everyone on this blog.

i have learned from this blog , after reading the many postings , is that we all are passionate about our horses. I love hearing about going to the shows ;learning about judging ; breeding and all the other interesting topics expressed here.  I don’t raise, breed or show at horses shows. I am a Morgan Horse performer…an entertainer so to speak. When my two black mares step out of the trailer people are so interested in these mares. Someone always asks me :”Are those mares Morgans.” I then get to hear wonderful stories about their Morgans or their dad’s Morgan horse.  Frequently I am the only person at the event who is performing with Morgan horses. I love being an ambasitor for this incredible breed.

I hope that you come and meet me at the Morgan Horse Convention in Sacramento. I will be preforming with my Dancing Morgans on Thursday , Feb 18th at the Woodland Stallion Station. Plese come and watch us dance.

One of my goals in life ( I am 65) is to keep up the preformances until the total ages of the horses and I equals 100 years of horsemanship. We are getting close. I would like to go to the WEG in Kentucky with my mares and dance before I get too old. My mares just keep getting better. They have great minds and even better bodies….they are after all Morgan horses.

Someone recently asked  if these mares are registered as I use only their barn names in public. Rest assured, ”The  Most Versititle Morgans Mares in the the World “are registerd. The resigistered  names of my mares are as follows:. Bob= Rockway Queen Nativa 0133824 and Valentine =Rockway Razah 0133825. Both mares were born in 1994 and are half sisters.

Please feel free to visit my website at www.carts-carriages.com. I hope to see and meet many of you at the Morgan Horse Convention in Sacarmento, California. Also I welcome emails at carts-carriages@ccounty.net

Cheers and looking forward to meeting you,

Name That Injury…

Here is a video of my daughter and I riding our mare, Cherrydale Scarlet O’Hara (I am the person at the end trying to squeeze her BIG behind in the little tiny weenie kids saddle!)   Scarlet sustained an injury several years ago and has healed as much as she possibly can.  The people at her barn look at her and can’t pinpoint what the problem is.  See what you think:

We think Scarlet did a “Bambi on ice” move an completely tore her peroneus tertius ligament in her left hind leg.  We really didn’t think we would ever ride her again, except to walk slowly around the field.  When I started riding her again this fall she was a little unsteady but quickly gained strength and has come a long nicely (although the canter is a little like an old car with bad shocks).  She doesn’t have any pain and to see her out in the field jumping over the creek one would think she was never injured in the first place.  We hope to have my daughter show her at some of the small, day shows in our area.

I just thought you all might find this interesting since it is an extremely rare injury and hers was the worst cases a prominent saddle horse vet had ever seen.

Morgans in Saddlebreds

I may come across as an idiot – I apologize, but I am curious. The Morgan horse played a role in the development of the Saddlebred horse, right? What traits from the Morgan did the Saddlebred horse inherit? I know that this is a broad question, but I wonder if when a Morgan horse has some Saddlebred looking qualities where that stems from? Could it be that along the way – the Saddlebred picked some of its’ unique qualities from the Morgan horse (wayyy back) and that once in a while, these similar (and originally Morgan  traits) come out in the Morgan as well. Hmm – I’m trying to word this as simply as possible. Have people crossbred the horses at some point creating a Saddlebred lineage in the Morgan breed? As an amatuer I’m trying to get a better understanding of these two similar breeds – and just how closly tied they are.

NYSHBA show

The New York State Horse Breeders Association hosts a show in May that has Morgan classes. I was wondering if anyone has been to the show and could tell me what its like, I recently bought a Morgan and I am looking to show her a little this summer and this show is fairly close to home for us.

Class Lists Posted

OK – I get a little excited when the class lists start to get posted on line. I found NEM, CT, UPHA Spring Premiere posted on www.horseshowcentral.com :)
