Open park saddle! it was so much fun!
Speaking of the open park saddle..I wasn’t able to attend but I did watch the live streaming video of the show. Can someone who was there tell me why the heck Present Tense won??! Maybe the other horses screwed up and you couldn’t see it on the video. But judging off of what I saw, this is how I would have pinned it

This wasn’t the only class that left me scratching my head. How about the Open Pleasure Driving World Championship?! Or Roadster to Bike? Or Western Pleasure? It’s not like the whole thing was screwy, don’t get me wrong, it was no New England ’08, but in some of the classes it seemed to me that the top 3, sometimes 4 were a little mixed up. Like maybe some of them needed to switch places. I don’t know, I wasn’t there but I could hear the crowd and they seemed to agree with me.
Umm…guess mine would have to be Mickey Mouse winning her World Championship! :>)
The judges cards on the saddlehorse report gives some insight into the scoring of the classes. It seems they were pretty much on the same page for the open park class.
I agree with Anna. I didn’t understand some of the pinning for those classes with the exception of the Western pleasure class. There were just too many horses for me to really be able to judge from the live streaming video. My biggest questions are about the Open Pleasure Driving WC and the Open Park Saddle WC. What happened there?

The Open Park Saddle Championship was a bit of a disappointment. No one really stole the spot light. I think Present Tense won because he trots off all four corners, he is set in the bridle, and steady. He wasn’t as bright as he was in the qualifier, but he was good. It would probably make sense to you if you would have seen the class in person.
Yeah, I thought that might be it- like maybe he’s something in person but not from the video. But from the video he just looked completely all over the place; collapsing his inside shoulder both ways with his head towards the rail, looking all “willy nilly”, trotting all over the place, etc. and I have to say, there were MOMENTS in the victory pass where he looked set in the bridle because he was being baited but during the class he had one of the worst head sets in the class and definitely the worst of the 3 horses in the work off. The one thing he didn’t look was steady, IMO. Also, the biggest thing he’s lacking is ring presence. To me, there is just no way that he truly best Bugatti last night. or Vibrance. That’s just me. Though in the victory passes, it was obvious that the crowd agreed with me too. They went nuts for Bugatti and were pretty quiet for Present Tense and when he went around a second time it was DEAD SILENT. If Bugatti or even if Vibrance won and went around a second time the crowd would have been hooting and hollering.
I wish someone could post the scores from the judges’ cards on here since some people don’t subscribe to the Saddle Horse Report and cannot access the info on their site.
Agreed about the Open Park. Bugatti was the best in the class, no doubt. Same with CCR’s Outrajus Courajus in Pleasure Driving.

I totally agreed with the open pleasure driving, the Dragonsmeade horse was so alert, so fixed in his bridle and his overall presence was far better on that night. Corajus just wasn’t on his game. Plus the Dragonsmeade horse wins on conformation hands down.
I agreed with the park saddle class…present tense was the best horse in the class on that night. He was steady and trotted off all four. Bugatti is a junior horse and just seemed all over the place. Vibrance just doesnt have the backend to compete with them. The pleasure driving could have gone either way. As for me I thought Outrajus Courajus had it. And the western was a joke! I dont really know what happened there but it should have been tanqueray and firecrest e ticket!
Anon- I disagree about Carnegie Hall’s confo. I think Courajus is much typier. I wouldn’t have even had Carnegie Hall in top 3! I would have had Courajus first, Seattle Reign second, and Talk About Me in third. Then Carnegie in fourth. I agree western was a little off. What was the judges’ problem with Arboria Victorious in roadster to bike? He was awesome! Luman’s horse is nice but not as great a performer as Victorious. Plus, it broke!
Victorious had great speed but had no jog…I think thats what the judges didnt like. And with Seattle Reign it looked like he had blood in his spit…luckily they got it off before they excused them. I dont think the judges wanted to DQ him because he is a great horse so they let them get it cleaned up and bumped him to 3rd. Otherwise I think he would have been up there.
Also, Lumans horse has a great headset that Victorious doesnt…
Well being my first Nationals in person I have way too many favorite moments to list. I will say I have learned alot more about judging as my trainer did this show and we have been chatting about it as the week progressed. As you all know the ring is huge and there are three judges for many reasons but one thing I know is when one judge is way off from the others they usually saw something that we did not and the others did not, from their viewpoint. And I know ring presence is a part of showing but there are so many factors a good judge looks at, not just by how much applause is given for the particular horse. Each class I kept track of my “opinion”, the outcome and my trainers card (just for the heck of it) I learned alot for sure and it was fun!!

Thank you, Bella. “Jessica” tore her foot off about eight weeks ago. We were able to fix it and she was okay for Jubilee, but the shoe came off again at the beginning of the week/show. We tried to go, but she was sore. She will be fine. She just needs time to grow her foot. It was painful to watch the Ladies Park Saddle class and not be in there. Next year…
As beautiful as Outrajus Corajus broke his gait and just wouldn’t walk 2nd way. I know he’s pretty,but it happened right in front of the judge.
Well that explains it, I am glad it is not serious but what timing! I am sure it was painful watching for sure. Hey by the way, how did you ladies get the golf cart home?

Definitely the standing ovation for CCR’s Outragus Courajus…he definitely should have won that class. My daughter was listening to her iPod and she said that even she heard the thunderous crowd! Seeing him in person is unbelievable!
We are soooo geeked about our golf cart!!! We had our five horse trailer at the show so that is how we got it home. It will definitely get used around the farm.
On the World Western Class, Andy ‘s Mare was a clear winner there, from what I could see online,she walked off on a loose rein, and stayed walking. She does not set quite as high in the bridle as some of the others, but she certainly still is pretty too watch and has a nice cadence in her lope. The Fire ticket horse, also had a great ride. The way this class was called, caught alot of jiggers in there, that had done well earlier in the week, but unfortunately they got caught, and it was nice to see the walk actually being used in that class, as it is a gait of the class.
The Park saddle, the Present Tense horse was just more balanced and square moving than the rest. Way more hock on him than the HVK horse.
It was very evident in his victory pass.
Corajus was just not the better horse on the night in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong i LOVE him…but he was just beaten by a better performance on the night. I think Carnigehall is one of the most amazing pleasure driving horses out there, he has buckets of presence and unless you see him in real life you don’t really appreciate him for what he is.
As for the park I think the placings were pretty on the money, Present Tense had the most balanced motion.
Andy Marletts horse was the clear winner in the WC western open. I was there in person and she was breath taking. Beautiful class of horses.
I agree with the Open Park Saddle, and the Stallion qualifier. The qualifier only had 3, so I know I saw most of the class via live stream, and for the life of me I couldn’t figure that placing! I had Vibrance on top for both classes, and can’t blame Mike for not showing Stand and Deliver back! I know it’s unfair to judge a class via computer, but I was stumped on those 2 classes! I’d love to hear what those who were there thought!

The standing ovation from the crowd for Judy Whitney during the WC Park Harness class brought tears to my eyes. After her absence last year, it was truly spectacular to have her at Nationals this year.
While not his night, the response to OC in the WC Pleasure Driving. At 17, there are very few horses who love their jobs as much or who perform them as well as he does.
We are going to have SOOOOOO much fun on our golf cart!!!!! Dawn and I had a blast down there and I think I have to pick winning the golf cart as my favorite moment from OKC!!! Coming in a close second was winning the Reserve World Champion Ladies Classic Pleasure Driving title, but really, the golf cart was an absolutely hysterical experience!! I’m really glad Sally didn’t fall off the back when we were hauling it around the ring though
It is really hard to judge a class from watching it online, vs being there in person. Some of these horses have that intangible “it” factor that doesn’t translate well on video, plus the camera has such a limited view compared to what you can see when you’re there. The western class was spot on. Andy’s mare was so soft and cadenced through the whole class, handled all of the reversing at the jog, extending lopes, reversing back to the first way in an organized and collected manner. She’s gorgeous and I was so happy for Andy and to see a mare do it. I think Havenwood Sonata with Rock Walker was the last mare to win the open, but I’m not positive. Firecrest E-Ticket is gorgeous and had a great go, too.

The TV does give the animals a different look. We noticed that at the show while watching at the tack stall. By the end of the week we noted that the TV picture had a certain amount of “distortion.”
Actually…it became a running joke. Any time the trainers saw something to be corrected…we would argue, saying “No, its just distortion!”
Hands down, my favorite memory will be the after show party at Chisolms. It included a very interesting scavenger hunt by Carmen Hobson, where we gave her different items to get from some of our other Morgan friends.
Second favorite…when they called for the reverse after shutting the gait in the WC Open Western. It was genius! Andy had a well deserved win on his beautiful mare.
My favorite moment was WATCHING Janelle win the golf cart, drive it around the ring like a bat out of H-E, double hockey sticks, scare Howie to within an inch of his life and exit the ring like she stole the horse she was riding. Great ride!
How could I forget my first time at Club Rodeo,,,,yee haw~!
And I agree 100 % with Jan, Janelle you where a HOOT for sure, you made us all laugh. And when Jessica Bodner won a class Whitney ran out and he was so excited he let out these hoots and hollers that had us all laughing….and it is nice to see people excited when they win!
My favorite moment was actually watching Jessica Cavanaugh-Bodnar (she’s not all the way Bodnar quite yet!) win her first World title, actually the one Bella posted about! Like I said it was her first world title and our box went NUTS. She is one of my favorite people in the world and it was SO EXCITING to see her finally get the title she deserved so much!!! Whitney was ECSTATIC (heck we all were) and she couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day.
What made it even better was, just a few classes later, a 4 year old that she has in training (Tudor Oaks The Real Deal) and his owner/amateur rider, Nicole Peterson, won the 4 year old Hunter Pleasure Reserve World Championship title. I think it is a great testament to Jess that she can prepare a 4 year old and make him ready for an amateur to win a world title with!

I forgot to mention that moment also. I thought it was quite cool and a testament to both trainers that the champion and reserve champions of the 4 year old class both finished ahead of their trainers in that class. I thought they married already, thought it was in the fall? She has changed her name to Cavanaugh-Bodner, at least that is what she is listed as…anyways I agree, great moments, it is a joy to watch deserving people like them win and be so thrilled!

She and Whitney were married September 6th but she’s not quite ready to fully embrace a new last name!
I think next year she is going to be Jessica Bodnar. (Sounds weird to me after having called her Jessica Cavanaugh for so many years!) I am just so happy for her; I can’t think of a more deserving person. She works harder than anyone I know and treats every one of her training horses as though it were her own, and they love her for it.
The 4 year olds class was tough – there was a horse in there that should probably have been excused; he ran up one of our entries’ rear and he got pretty nervous about that. But that’s a horse show, I guess…
I thought that the two amateurs (the Champion was a junior exhibitor!) winning the 4 year olds class was pretty special – that is some pretty awesome advertising for the respective trainers!

She is lucky to have you as a friend, what kind words! I like to see nice people have success, I do not know her well, just Mark and Stan as my barn is friends with them….but I am a huge hunter lover and have been watching her horses, nice!! Yes that class was a bit nutty, but what nice horses! In fact I think it was a tough class, I had down my top 8 but cound not decide the order, they were all so nice. Most classes I picked out 2-3 I really liked, but this one, EIGHT! And 7 of them placed =) I love Cherrydale Melania, and she does such a wonderful job with her, and I have been watching Tudor Oaks for awhile also, just beautiful, beautiful hunters!! It was hunter heaven for me and anyone who likes hunters….and 4 year olds, this is what the future is like, how exciting!
Did anyone see the stallion park harness? I did not get to see any of the show so i looked at howie’s pictures. Flare look like the winner but i thought second and third could have flipped i understand pictures are pictures thats why i was wondering if anyone had seen the class. I’ve heard mixed results even in the championship (not about flaire). i’m thrilled for diane conrady, i ways always a fan. victor and bacardi were my favorites.
I agree about the 4 yr old class! Great hunter class, lots of competition and awesome horses.
I’m not sure if anyone has heard the circumstances around Hailey Perlee and HRS Mirror Immage….they won the WC 13 & under English Pleasure AND the WC 13 & under pleasure driving. They show out of Cedar Spring Farm. What most people don’t know is that this 12 year old dynamo takes lessons with Bonnie and trains the horse herself at home. She is a second generation horsewomen as her mom also took lessons from Bonnie in her younger days. I believe this was their first ever trip to the Grand National and I’m sure they were shell shocked over the whole experience. The candid pictures on Howe’s web-site were priceless and I for one can’t imagine anyone more deserving of all this.
To those who supported “OC”, thank you:) He’s a wonderful horse and still my favorite! There were 2 different types of horses, both wonderful, in there that night and 2 judges chose the other. That’s horse shows:)While he isn’t perfect, I think we’ll look long and hard before we get another plesure horse that takes his smooth stride that can cover ground with such ease. It’s a Morgan trait that I’ve always loved about him. The older his babies get, the more they take on his qualities so we’ll cross our fingers that we get that lucky twice in a lifetime:)Thanks again for the cheers!
CBMF Crown Prince was amazing– what a true trotting animal! I really enjoyed the Open Park Saddle championship and thought it pinned right. Also agreed with the pleasure driving. I personally like OC better and I was really pulling for him, but it was a close call that night, and I predicted the outcome. Carnegie Hall was really ON! I also loved how many workout there were. Open English Pleasure WC workout and the amateur park saddle workouts were just GREAT!
jjoker – In my opinion all the Park harness open classes pinned correctly. In the stallion qualifier High Definiton was just beautiful! And totally deserved second hands down. In the Chmapionship he just wasn’t ‘on’ otherwise i’m pretty sure he would have come reserve. Fusion had a really good go in the championship and i definately had it pinned the way it was.
I had a few “favorite” moments. Some on the show grounds a few off. LOL
The Open pleasure driving class I thought was great. I am a huge “OC” fan, but Carnegie Hall was the better horse that night, he was Amazing. Seattle Rein was also looking spectacular.
All the work outs were great, I don’t think there were any last year. I thought the open
English Pleasure Class was Great! The top two looked Excellent and I think it could have went either way. Again, one or three opinions make the call.
I thought the EQ classes were great. I watched quite a bit of them having a good friend show for the first time. The talent of the top 8 to 10 riders was amazing.
Alicia, I too thought Prince looked excellent and won the class hands down. That was a crazy class! Gotta love 3 year olds.
I had quite a few favorite moments… many of which have already been stated by others.
During the Junior exhibitor park saddle Championship, Hylee’s Goldsmith threw a shoe just before starting the canter the second way. They decided to let him finish without the shoe and they WON. So her victory pass was just her walking (and possibly crying). I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this was Alyssa Wick’s last year as a junior exhibitor.
WC Park Saddle:
Bugatti is coarse and just ran out of gas.
Vibrance has no back end.
Thought Bonnie Blue should have beaten both these.
I saw Bonnie Blue break a couple times. She was also probably the least typey horse in the class.
Like Type had anything to do with the pinnings. i.e. Bada Bing.
wow we loved bada bing. . He is tall but he still has that Morgan pazazz and pretty face in my opinion. Our box had him picked unamiously as one of the favorite performances.He really put on a show. We also thought Noble Italia was a strong winner in the three year old harness championship class . We thought Crown Prince won the qualifier for sure hands down. But our group thought Noble Italia was the winner in the championship. Only one judge agreed though and Crown Prince was the winner.
