USA team wins Gold at Team Morgan Invitaional- International Saddle Seat Equitation Competition held at Mass Morgan

“Team Morgan” is an international competitive Saddle Seat Equitation riding team.  This team is comprised of the top six Morgan riders in the United States. Being chosen was based on each rider’s cumulative GPA, community service, continuing education, a personal interview, and their skills and placings in Saddle Seat Equitation at the 2007 Morgan Grand National and World Championship horse show.  Team Morgan 2008 is coached by Mr Mike Slomkowski and is comprised of the following members: Lyssa Bomgaars, Brynne Cummings, Kelsey Irvine, Talor Sams, Caitlyn Scholl, and Maggie Smith. The Team Morgan Invitational was held this past week during the Mass Morgan horse show.

The USA team competed against the South African Junior World Cup team.  Each team drew two pools of horses out of a hat.  Each team was given a 30 minute practice with each pool to decide which of the six riders would ride each horse.  The competition itself was held over two days.  Each day, riders performed a group rail work class and then an individual pattern. Each rider was given a numeric score for each part.  The two scores were added to give a total score for that rider for that day.  At the end of the first day, the top three individual riders were announced.  At the end of the second day, the top three individual riders were again announced.  The individual scores were then added to get the team scores.  Individuals and teams were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.

After the first day of competition, Team Morgan was in second place by 15 points.  Taylor Sams won the individual silver and Brynne Cummings won the individual bronze.  After making some strategy changes, Team Morgan won the second day and the total team gold medal!!  Kelsey Irvine won the individual gold, Taylor Sams won the individual silver and Brynne Cummings won the individual bronze.  The girls were great ambassadors for the breed and really represented the USA and Morgans well.

I spent the week with the team, as my younger sister is Kelsey Irvine, and I could not have been more proud of our girls.  They bonded quickly and worked hard to make the competition a success.  The South African team was wonderful.  The kids hung out together throughout the week and they said over and over how impressed they were with our team’s hospitality.

Team Morgan USA is headed to South Africa to compete in February 2009.  They are seeking donations, large and small; to help the team offset costs.  If you would like to donate, please contact AMHA.  They can have the funds earmarked correctly for Team Morgan. If you have any questions about the team or the competition, please let me know.

I was fortunate to be there for this competition, and what a thrill to watch! Kudos to both teams, they did a great job, not an easy task was at hand.

  2. Wasn’t there an Assistant Coach to this team as well?
