Looking For A Show Harness

We have a customer that is looking to purchase either a used or new show harness.  This will be the first year that her horse is being shown in harness and she does not want to make a huge investment if it is not something that she is going to be doing long term.

Please please please contact me if you have anything for sale.

Thanks so much!

Horse & Academy

Today I attended the first ever editorial board meeting for the new advice and all around fun magazine Horse & Academy. The board is all children ages 8-16. It is a bold move (even though I am 12 myself).

The idea of this Magazine is for parents to understand and learn all about not only academy but also saddle seat ridding in general. the link is as follows:

Learn to Ride and Drive in Style

A while ago, the UPHA, American Saddlebred Horse Association, and Hackney Horse Society launched a campaign on EquestrianLife.com to get more people interested in saddle seat riding and pleasure driving. In the program, called “Learn to Ride and Drive in Style,” Participating farms offer new students a free lesson so they can see what saddle seat is all about.

Morgans were notably absent from this program, but not anymore!

I hope a lot of Morgan farms with lesson programs will participate in this. Opening the barn doors to beginners (or curious riders from other sports) is exactly the kind of positive PR saddle seat needs.

2012 AMHA Convention

I’ve been squirreling away a few extra dollars for the past few months in hopes of going to the convention this year. I’ll be perfectly honest: I really just want to go somewhere warm in February, and this is a great excuse to do so.

I attended part of the convention in 2010 and found the seminars really worthwhile. They’re still working out the Orlando seminar schedule, and unfortunately it looks like they won’t have different options like they have in the past, but it still looks like a variety of interesting topics. Plenty of downtime to visit Disney, if that’s your thing, or sit by the pool if it isn’t.

Anyone else planning to go? The current schedule is here: http://www.morganhorse.com/association/annual_convention/annual_schedule/

And here we go again

This is why I unsubscribed to the Morgan Bulletin Board, and countless other “Morgan blogs.”  What starts out as a light-hearted forum to discuss our love of showing horses,  yes, this blog was started for SHOW people to talk about SHOWING their morgans, turns into another mud-slinging drama-fest.  People who feel the need to sit up on a soap box and hear themselves pontificate have found yet another blog to pollute.

I am erasing the link for this site from my favorites list.  UGH…another one down the crapper.

AMHA and horse slaughter

Other horse blogs are lit up with discussions on the new law authorizing funds for USDA inspection of horse slaughter facilities in the US.   I don’t want to stir up needless controversy, but does AMHA have an official position on this, or are they considering one?

The APAHA (Arabian Prof and Amateur Horseman Assoc) has come out with a pro-slaughter statement.   Not the best-reasoned statement, apparently.

My impression has been that the Morgan breed is small enough that when an instance of abuse/need of rescue arises, we try to take care of our own messes.  In some parts of the country, however, rescues are overwhelmed and the argument goes that if slaughter houses could re-open, then a lot of the excess unwanted horses could be removed and the marketplace for the average horse would improve.  (There are some fundamental flaws in that logic, but I am not going there right now).

AMHA’s Champion Title Program

I am wondering how you feel about this new program. You can read about it here: http://www.morganhorse.com/competitions/title_program/
I am not in favor of it for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that Open competition results are ineligible. That said, maintaining an accessible historical database of any verifiable competition result by any registered Morgan should be sufficient. There is no need or real benefit to the breed to add these designations to registered names in the registry.

Revival of the Morgan Horse

How about some comments on the amazing combined TMH that just arrived?  Looks like the Sport Horse people heard the challenge of “put up or shut up” and bought some ads.  What a thrill to see a huge magazine again.  Great articles, something for everyone.

I was particularly intrigued by Steve Kinney’s suggestion of a “Traveling Show” of Morgans to tour the major horse expos.   How much better this would be than sponsoring a 4-in-hand to travel to Europe! (There is nothing wrong with 4-in-hands, but the market is tiny and is, for the most part, already dominated by European Warmbloods.  It is a rich person’s game that does little to grow the market for the rest of the breed).   We would be marketing the Morgan to an audience which we already know loves horses, has money and wants to be entertained.   Yes, the market can be fickle (Gypsy Vanners, anyone?) but we all know that once you have a Morgan, you tend to stick with them.

I have said before in these pages that the Morgan horse should be the most popular horse in America for the 40-something amateur rider who wants a baroque, kind, pretty and athletic companion with a genuinely American backstory.   The Frisians are stealing the spotlight that should be on the Morgan.  The Sport Morgan people can lead the way in this.  This is the same opportunity that existed at the start of the carriage driving era, an opportunity to see the Morgan Horse in a new way.
